#PriyankaReddy trending on Twitter, women politicians remain silent!

Social media has been stormed with messages demanding strict punishment to the preparators of the crime(s) against the 27 year old veterinary doctor, Priyanka Reddy on the outskirts of the Hyderabad. After the news broke out yesterday, Netizens took their anger and thoughts to fast track the investigation on social media. #PriyankaReddy, #HangTheRapists, #Nirbhaya are trending on Twitter.

Surprisingly, the powerful women politicians have abstained till now to react or comment on the issue and have remained silent. Starting from the BSP supremo Mayawati, her last tweet was on 26 November relating to Constitution Day and one on some fake information being spread relating to her party members. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Congress also chose to remain silent. On the day of the incident, her tweets focussed on dwindling economy news and rising onion prices. However, the party’s National Spokesperson and President of All India Mahila Congress, Sushmita Dev wrote a couple of tweets and used #PriyankaReddy. She also retweeted the meeting of All India Mahila Congress’s with the family of the victim.

Political leaders from TMC also remained silent. West Bengal CM, Mamta Banerjee, has not tweeted anything till now regarding the incident. Her recent tweets are mostly tributes to some late personalities and a congratulatory message for Uddhav Thackeray. Mimi Chakraborty, TMC’s Lok Sabha MP from the Jadavpur constituency of the West Bengal, also followed her party supremo and has remained silent till now.

Shiv Sena’s Deputy Leader, Priyanka Chaturvedi, did put up a tweet demanding for “exemplary punishment to the preparators” and “speedy justice” to the victim and her family.

Women politicians from BJP follows the same pattern. The top party women leaders have opted to remain silent on the situation till now. The country’s finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, has been busy defending the economic slowdown of the nation. Her twitter account is all about retweeting either PM Modi’s tweet or Office of Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman. So far the minister has not put out any tweet on the unfateful incident. Similarly, her fellow colleague and minister, Smriti Irani has also been reluctant until now to post anything relating to the rape incident. Moreover, Smriti Irani has retweeted a tweet from PM Modi’s twitter handle which talks about increasing women empowerment during the tenure of Modi-Shah led government in India.

Another party big-wig, Meenakshi Lekhi, has been busy tweeting about #FitIndiaMovement but nothing on the unfortunate event that took place yesterday in Hyderabad. Meenakshi Lekhi has been the National Spokesperson for the party and Lok Sabha MP from the New Delhi constituency. Party’s president for the youth wing and Lok Sabha MP from Mumbai North Central, Poonam Mahajan has also refused to tweet anything relating to the incident till now. Her latest tweet feed is about retweeting PM Modi’s twitter handle. Party’s other Lok Sabha MP and a Bollywood actress, Hema Malini has also remained silent on the issue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s twitter does not show any tweet regarding the incident. Following the Jharkhand state assembly elections and the first visit of newly elected Srilankan President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa to India, Modi’s twitter feed is all about these events only.
